Dr.Berber Vlieg-Boerstra graduated as a dietitian in 1984. She has a long standing interest in food allergy. Since 1987, she has been working as a dietitian in private practice in the field of food allergy.

Her scientific career started in 2001 at the Beatrix Children’s Hospital of the University Medical Center Groningen, where she has been working on a doctorate thesis on double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenges (DBPCFCs) in children. In 2008 she completed her PhD. Since then, she has been working as a post doctoral research dietitian at the University Medical Center Groningen, since May 2010 at the Emma Childrens Hospital, Academic Medical Center, Amsterdam. Since September 2015 she is affiliated to the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis (OLVG) in Amsterdam, where she is training a younger collegue in dietary management of food allergy.

Topics of research include food challenges in children and adults, nutritional and dietetic aspects of food allergy, immunomodulatory effects of foods and nutrition, diet and nutrition in patients with Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE), the interaction between nutrition, the microbiome and allergic disease, cashew nut allergy, efficacy of dietary intervention by the dietitian in children with cow’s milk allergy, national and international guideline development, and quality of life.
